Merrilee Rush
Merrilee Rush (born Merrilee Gunst on January 26, 1944, in Seattle, Washington) is an American singer best known for her hit song “Angel of the Morning,” which became a major success in 1968. Growing up in Seattle.
She studied classical piano from a young age and began her musical career by joining local bands like the Amazing Aztecs and later Merrilee and Her Men.
In 1965, she formed Merrilee Rush and the Turnabouts, gaining popularity in the Pacific Northwest’s teen dancehall circuit. Her big break came when she was introduced to record producer Chips Moman during a tour with Paul Revere & the Raiders1. Moman produced her recording of “Angel of the Morning,” which reached No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and No1. 1 in Canada.
Throughout her career, Merrilee Rush appeared on numerous television programs and continued to perform, although she never quite reached the same level of success as her breakout hit. Despite this, “Angel of the Morning” remains a beloved classic and has been covered by many artists over the years!
